Angela Merkel Visits JAG in Buenos Aires 2017-10-09T18:49:46+00:00

Project Description

On June 8th, we had the unprecedented visit of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel who visited the CIRA Community’s Synagogue in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Merkel visited the synagogue to inaugurate a newly restored German organ that was specially built for the synagogue in 1931 and had been broken for years. The organ restoration was done thanks to the German Embassy and took about two years to finish. This Walcker organ is one of the three remaining organs built for synagogues. All other organs were  destroyed by Nazi Germany. Merkel also mentioned the bombing against the Israel Embassy in 1992 and the attack against AMIA in 1994. Merkel asked us to keep fighting anti-Semitism wherever and whenever.

Rabbi Shimon Mogilevsky thanked her for her words and mentioned that the world rests on three foundations: truth, law and peace. Chancellor Merkel embodies these virtues. He asked, “to multiply personalities like her.”

Gustavo Michanie  of JAG and his husband Marcelo were present.
